Rift Valley Adventures (RVA) requires a dynamic, motivated and self driven person for the position of Operations Manager, to facilitate all operational aspects of our schools, corporate, community, and adventure training programs.  The Applicant will preferably have an Outdoor Education or similar degree with outdoor qualifications; work experience in a variety of adventurous pursuits with international clients is required, together with a proven leadership record and detail to the job. A good level of management skills would be advantageous. RVA is a dynamic and growing company always striving to improve delivery and safe practice. Operations Manager Overall Role

•    Manage RVA camps and activity equipment at Ol Pejeta, Ngare Ndare and  sites around Kenya and Africa where applicable;
•    Ensure that all field equipment is in working order and arrange for maintenance and repairs when required.
•    Instruct mountain biking, rockclimbing, abseiling, canyoning, kayaking, canoeing, trekking, group dynamic activities on programmes;
•    Together with stores clerk, ensure all activity equipment is cleaned and in good working order after the completion of every programme and packed away securely;
•    To work with GM/MD to advertise/select suitable casual employees primarily for field operations.
•    Group Lead or Co-group lead on programmes;
•    Liaise with the Managing Directors and deal with necessary requests;
•    Oversee all instructors.
•    Oversee accurate keeping of store records
•    Help out the MD in any capacity.


•    In the field your direct managers are the GM/MD.  You should take instructions from them unless yours, other staff member’s or the clients’ safety is compromised by carrying out the instruction.
•    In the field where casual specialized staff have been employed to run a programme or a specific activity you will be in charge of supervision for the duration of their work.
•    During non-field work periods your direct supervisor is the GM. In their absence you should refer to your job descriptions and identify areas of your position that require attention.

Field Management Responsibilities:

•    To ensure the safety of clients and staff during the organization, implementation and completion of a programme.
•    To implement a specified programme with consideration of clients’ abilities, weather, security and other variables.
•    To ensure all staff are informed of all required tasks.
•    To ensure staff adhere to all health and safety requirements when working with clients.
•    To oversee management of Ol Pejeta Camp and Forest Camp operations when located at site and manage with camp staff.
•    To deal appropriately with any medical emergency and liaise with MD’s (where possible) and utilize necessary resources and medical assistance.


•    Provide planning paperwork to GM and staff at least 1 week before programme commencement.
•    Organize transport with transport contractor and ensure operator meets logistical requirements i.e. pick up/ drop off of clients inline with program needs.
•    Establish budget with GM for catering, kitchen, cleaning, equipment hire, transport  and casual wage expenses.
•    Provide accurate written record of expenditure for programme and deliver to office within 24 hours of programme completion.
•    Where carrying out back to back field operations pass on all documentation to MD’s or ensure timely delivery upon return to office.
•    Set-up of campsite or lodge for no. of clients, cleaning and maintenance and clean-up of site/lodge. Preparation for next programme or clients.
•    Set rosters for RVA and camp staff and supervise.
•    Ensure timely delivery of all activities and meals.
•    Assign tasks where required and set timetable for programme.
•    Liaise with landowners.

Qualifications (minimum)

•    SPA/SPI  or  equivalent to British qualifications
•    Canoeing/Kayaking Skills Instructor Level 1/2
•    Wilderness First Aid equivalent to WFR
•    Summer Mountain Leaders (ML) or equivalent
•    Canyoning or Coasteering or similar
•    Experiential Learning
•    Management experience
•    Mountain Bike Leader
