Assistant Outdoor Instructor Development Program

 

Proposed Dates: Monday 27th - 30th November
Venue: Rift Valley Adventures Forest Camp
Open to: Freelance Instructors

This is an initiative by Rift Valley Adventures, to offer entry level and subsequent training and skills development in the respective role of Assistant Guide within clear and set parameters of safety and protocols.

The base / entry level requirements for this position will require the Assistant Guide to;

  • Show professional interest, hand skills and soft skills having been exposed to a level of basic outdoor programming locally or internationally
  • Be trained or required to show competence in facilitation of adventure-based learning activities
  • Be trained or required to show competence in rope skills and techniques including but not limited to knot tying, belay techniques and an understanding of rope activities
  • Be trained or required to show competence in Biking as an activity as well as Bike skills and Bike mechanics up to the set level of their operation
  • Be trained or required to show competence in group initiatives, team tasks, team building up to the set level of their operation
  • Be trained or required to show competence in water activities and ability to engage in and assist in activities such as canyoning and abseiling
  • Be trained or required to show competence in group management and an understanding of group dynamics
  • Be trained or required to show competence in risk assessment and management
  • Be trained or required to show competence in proper handling and care of gear and equipment
  • Be trained or required to show competence in interpreting weather and other environmental conditions
  • Be trained or holding valid qualification of Wilderness First Aid or Higher Activity specific skills such as canyoning, bike mechanics and others are preferred but are not a requirement. Basic experience in the outdoors and willingness to learn is a pre-requisite.

Work / Training Program:

Successful applicants shall be referred to as trainees. Trainees will embark on a *3 month long training program consisting of work and training. They will learn outdoor skills and gain experience through training and assisting in the field. They will gain resources for this purpose and will be assessed during the duration of their program. They will work with schools and army groups as needed, earning an internal qualification as Base / Level 1 RVA Outdoor guides.

Modules
Modules to be covered in this course will vary and will revolve around the Principles of Safe Place, Safe Person, Safe Practice, Safe Equipment. Modules will include Hard skills and Soft Skills and include topics such as group management, communication, basic field paperwork, stores operation, rope skills, equipment, knots, introduction to field activities such as biking, climbing, abseiling, canyoning and others.

Food & Accommodation: Food and accommodation will be provided while on training and/or work internship. Travel costs can be reimbursed as per prior agreement.

Benefits & Remuneration: Trainees will benefit from a high level of Outdoor training, earn a Base / Level 1 RVA Outdoor guide qualification and enjoy first priority for freelance work with RVA. During the duration of their training and stay, trainees will receive a stipend to assist with their meals and upkeep while not on duty

Health Cover: Trainees to provide own cover valid for the duration of their engagement with RVA.
